Most of my tools I ordered from McMaster-Carr. My soft jaws for my vice are just aluminum angle stock that I cut to length. 8-)

I can look tomorrow if you like, but they are all Mititoyos. My Micrometers are digital .00005 resolution, I have 1", 2", and 3" sizes (still need to buy the 4"), my dial bore indicator is the Mititoyo set that goes up to like 6 inches. My dial indicator is also Miti, .0001 resolution.

So what size do I need to work on a VW?

I use them all, but I'm more anal about this stuff than most people. Honestly, you don't *need* any of this stuff to build a motor, I just like to blueprint everything...

Is it a good book? I have always wanted a copy, but have never had the money at the time to get it. Do ya know anybody with a copy for sale?

Blueprinting is basically matching all the parts together for proper tolerances. Like what I did with my bearings, you measure everything, and then modify things as necessary to achieve the desired oil clearances. I did that for all the bearings, the oil pump, the wrist pins, the distributor drive, etc etc. In the end you end up with a "blueprint" of your motor, I probably have over a dozen sheets of paper that are full of measurements I took and detailing changes I made to get the measurements to my specs. For instance, here's my notes on the cam and its bearings:
