I'm looking at a bus with this 2.0L engine in it. I dont know much about them. Type 4 engine? is that what theyre called? Are they as simple as the type 1 engines to work on and maintain? This particular one is set up with dual Weber 44 carbs. I heard somewhere that these engines are prone to drop valves? anyone know anything about that? Let me know what yall think about these engines.

i'm guessing it's a later baywindow? yes, type 4. I think that 72 was the first year for the type IV engine in a bus and in 74 they went to fuel injection. I've never had one, so i don't know personally how they perform.

I had one in a 75 bay window...I wasn't too fond of it...

Loved that bus, though. Here's some inspiration - it next to my old 72 super beetle

The bottomends damn near bulletproof, but 2.0L bus heads are seriously crack prone. I'm stuffing a type 4 motor into my notch, took it apart to inspect it, sure enough 3 cracks on the heads. bought a set of "crack-free" heads off the samba, one giant crack. I ended up buying a set of 1.7L heads and hopefully monday or tuesday they will be off to Rimco to get bored to 94mm and a valve job/assembly. The type 4 motor is awesomeness in everyway compared to a type 1 style motor.

ninja edit: here is a really informative website, has just about everything on it. http://www.ratwell.com/

does Kris Lauffer roll a t1 or t4? I think it was a t1 the last time i saw it; most prostockers roll t1 that i know.

Everyone making big power is doing it with a type 1. Including those crazy Lauffers. The exhaust ports on TIV heads are no good for power. Nice intake ports though, but if you can't get it out... TIV's are good for longevity though, no doubt about that.

ya ya ya , just words...Sandeep and Wally!

We will see what mine makes but I'm only $1300 into the longblock, thats including buying the motor, buying another set of heads, a little head work and a cam. Thats what a 1776 long block?
