What's the difference?

What is a 'Pict'?

The PICT number refers to updates made to them, while the first number (30, for instance) is the basic body size. All 30's for instance have the same flange on the bottom, etc. Here's some info from VW Resource:

"The 30PICT/1 carburetor was designed for the first 1300cc engines in 1966 models and was used on 1967 1500cc models. Then came the 30PICT/2 in 1968/1969 for the 1300/1500cc engines and the 30PICT/3 for the US-only 1970 1600cc single-port engine. These all have the same sized venturi (24mm), which allows a larger airflow than the earlier 28 series - which suits the larger capacities better. The /1, /2 and /3 30PICTs have increasingly complicated fuel circuits for better mixture control. Any of the 30 series (30PICT/1, 30PICT/2, 30PICT/3 and modern replacement H30/31) will work fine with the 1500cc and 1600cc engines."

I hope this helps. BTW, 30 series carbs are considered to be good, very simple and reliable.

So maybe I should rebuild one or both and use it on my TIGHT budget engine rebuild? I picked up a '71 1600dp motor and have 1600sp heads last night.

They're cheap to rebuild, it wouldn't hurt to try. The only thing you have to look out for on those old carbs is the throttle shaft becoming loose in the carb body, when that happens they will leak vacuum and you will never get it to run right. There is someone on Kemah that adds bushings to them to make them as good as new. I think Ben (beetleluvr) used him before.

That be Kiefernet (Samba name). He is a real standup guy and does good work. He rebuilt the carb on my 56. I can get you his phone number if you like (PM me).

I've been to Keifernet's (Keith) shop and would say the same as Ben just did. He does excellent work and knows what he's doing.
