My '63 bug's been running hot. Pulled the engine (AH series 1600 DP) and put in the missing engine compartment and doghouse seals.

While I had it out, I thought I'd check a few other things. The exhaust side of the intake is clogged solid with carbon. Looks like the whole center section is full. Had a friend run it through a heated parts cleaner, then tried the cable in the drill routine and a coathanger but none of this has worked.

Seriously considering baking it out on the coals of a campfire.

Chuck it or ?

The preheat tube is clogged?

Exhaust side of the intake?

Maybe. Sorry, wasn't sure what it was called. It's the tube through which exhaust gas is supposed to pass to heat up the air/fuel mixture. Front part of the stock manifold. Heat risers, right?

I wouldn't worry about it too much, it's more important in colder climates....

10/4 ok, next question. Muir says timing should be 5 deg for this engine but it has a 009 distributor and a 34 PICT 3. I'm doubting the 009 was on it originally and I'm not sure about the 34 PICT 3.

Sambanista's say 30 deg at 3500 RPM (or where ever it's at max advance). Is this legit?

Having the 34 PICT 3, guess I need to dump the 009 or change out the jets to make the mixture more rich. Definately have the dreaded flat spot.

This was interesting too...

Lots of misinformation out there. Do you all agree with any of this?

Thanks.

somewhere in the 28 to 32 degree range is okay for most engines with a 009. the 34-PICT3 does tend to have a flat spot when used with 009's, so if you have a proper vac advance dizzy I would run it. You will get better drivability with vac advance and the flat spot should disappear. It may run fine though, every engine is a little different.
