WTF is that other terminal for on the starters, other than confusion? I've made that mistake too (hooking up to the wrong one)

Take a step back... and take a deep breath(or drink a beer).

You could have got a shitty starter new off the shelf. I had the problem when I had the squareback. Make sure the car is in neutral and then jump the big wire post to the switch wire post with a screwdriver and see if it turns over. You can also have them test the starter in-store before you buy it. The starters sit on the shelf a long time. The solenoid doesn't like that. I found that it isn't the starter that goes to hell, its the solenoid. I literally went through 6 starters before I bought a solenoid from somebody on theSamba and swapped it out on the original starter that was in the car. Starters are the biggest pain in the ass.........

That's why I spent the good money and got a Bosch rebuilt automatic starter, I'm getting a headache just thinking about all the problems I've had with starters in the past.

I test the starter and it 12 volt.. I test the red wire on top starter and my wife ignition it and got 11.3 volt.. I test the "hotwire" got it start! something is missing :help:

so you got 12v to the smaller red wire on the starter and it still doesn't start?
