I’ve been asked a few times lately about cases.. and although I am NO PROFESSIONAL!!! I think I have a general grasp on a things to look for..
First off.. General condition like pitting/Corrosion type items are things I stay away from.. Also always check either the flat part where the oil cooler goes
Or sometimes like RIMCO will stamp the round area where the rear main seal goes.. for numbers like bored and thrust cuts.. they should be like .020/.040/.060
Lots of builders don’t like big cut cases.. not because of the cuts.. but mainly because why was it cut so much.. was the case HAMMERED to death a few times?
Big cut cases seem to say the case had a rough life prior to you getting a hold of it..

Also you can look down the center main journal shaft with the case together and tight – you should not be able to see any light though any of the matting surfaces..

You should be leery of dirty filthy cases.. not that they are for sure junk .. but it hides stuff.. and says something about the seller or prior owner.. etc..

AGAIN these are just a quick rundown of items I quickly assess and others may be far better and know far more than me to make different assessments. If you have anything
To add please do.. I think these things can be helpful to all of us here..
