I think going to put VDO sender on relief plug hole. Thanks!

Good choice! Now the question is, what gauge to go with it, and where to put it? :P

VDO oil temp. gauge and maybe billet panel or other. :?

I wouldn't run something like that on a lowered VW that will reduce ground clearance. I run a sender in the oil pressure relief plug hole, at the front (flywheel side) of the engine. I believe it's this one http://www.piersideparts.net/V323064.html
Nice and out-of-the-way ;)

I am using this one also.

I could be over thinking the placement of the pressure relief sender.. but frontside/Pulley side seems a little better.. as the flywheel side would and again I am just spitballing here is after oil cooler oil..

I assume what kind of full flow/oil cooler setup would fall in the same catagory if you ran a filter then cooler then back to the case.. that oil would be way cooler than that -that is the sump..

Of course.. what is the general idea? oil temp on the HOT side of the oil or the cool side?

or if you know your car runs well maybe just an idea of seeing things get out of hand is what you really are watching? Sorta Like my balance scale.. I could somewhat careless if it is accurate.. I really only care if it is consistant -that is the important factor.

I think also engine health and state of tune would really be better watched at the head(S) both seperately.. or better yet at the exhuast ports each one of them..
that would tell you way more than anything else.. I say run four temp gauges and four 02 sensors add two oil temps on both relief plugs ,don't forget a few pressure guages.. one just out of the pump and one in the stock location and and and.. w:pw

Or just an idiot light unit with the dipstick unit for temp. ???? :hillbilly:

of course I am just kidding about everything.. but did wonder which location is a clear picture location for the relief unit.. (with wiring not a factor)

hmm that is interesting, you will be getting the temp before it makes it to the cooler or filter, wonder how that plays into the theory of which is the best spot.

Kostya showed me that a while back.. I thought it seemed like a sound idea.. fresh off the bottom of the case oil temp..

I dig it... RJ you are doing a great job i think putting your car together

wouldn't the sump cover sensor give the most accurate?

That's pretty cool, hadn't seen that one before. I guess you can argue about what location is "most accurate," but at the end of the day, where ever you end up locating it, you just need to know where your car normally runs, then just keep an eye out for deviations from that that may spell trouble.

I can say that where mine is though, it corresponds pretty good to when my 180-degree fan thermostat kicks on, so I believe it to be fairly meaningful in absolute terms. I don't think I've ever seen over about 190 degrees in my car, if anything it runs too cool. Cylider head temp (maesured on #3 plug) usually runs around 275-290 degrees. Whoever said big motors run hot was full of hot air :P
