Here's a little write up and, more importantly, a picture (click on the little blue button) in the link below for replacing swingaxle seals.

The Idiot's guide doesn't say much about it, but I've read that the Bentley has a picture and whatnot. Might want to use that instead.

Kermit sells a seal replacement kit that's pretty reasonable. There are two paper gaskets, but don't panic. Only one is needed for Type 1's. Both are needed for Type 2's. Everything came apart pretty easily. Just needed to clean everything up thoroughly and used some emery cloth to clean some rust off the seal surface. There are supposed to be two o-rings in there too. Keep looking they aren't obvious.

Also, jack up the swing axle (not just the car) high enough that it doesn't leak and check your trans fluid level when done installing the seals. As long as you're already busting your knuckles, it might not be a bad time to change out the trans fluid, and, maybe even the rear wheel bearing.

Not for nothing but oil soaked brake shoes won't slow your baby down very much so they may need to be replaced too.

Good luck.

Looking at my parts last night for my rear disk brake kit, I couldn't figure out what's the difference (or is there any?) between the Washer #7 and the oil deflector #13 in the diagram below. My kit came with a new seal kit that has what I guess is the washer (#7). I haven't put one of these together in a while and my mind is a bit rusty on the topic
Also, the two paper gaskets, does the second one go between the axle end casting and backing plate (Caliper bracket in my case)?

Another little tip -- when on a budget... using old hard to find parts or just want to do this...

Is when the pads get soaks with oil.. or brake fluid.. you can use a torch and chuck them up in a vise..
heat them up a little at time on the pad while using a shop rag.. will bring the fluid to the top and the rag can wipe away the fluid...a slow process but doable..

I saw this happen with a fellow that had porsche brakes and wasn't looking to just toss his pads.. so he was
heating -wiping-heating -wiping-- and so on...

I have never been in the position to do this.. but he says it has been a long time trick to save the pads..

?? seemed to work fine..

#7 is a lot smaller and thinner than #13 so their is a difference. You shouldn't have that type of endcap that uses #13 though unless it has been changed. Also you only use 1 of the paper gaskets they put 2 in there due to the fact that a reduction gear box uses 2.

I don't have the end cap that has the tube on it, if that's what you mean. I guess I have the later style, that is supposed to use the deflector. Is the thin washer that comes with the seal kit #7 on the diagram then? Does anyone even sell the oil deflector (assuming it's not whats in the seal kit)?
Thanks

Thanks Chuck. That's not what I'm looking for, those are used on earlier setups ;)

I know I have had the same question about the deflector, after I upgraded to short axles....

I haven't noticed any leaks, but I am pretty sure I only used what was in the kit pictured above,I think Kostya did Eliots notch......with the same caps.

I figured it had been changed out on you. YES the kit contains #7 as for #13 I could not find any for sale new the last time I looked. I am pretty sure that I got some from Billy last time and he got them from Gary.
