What's the difference between a 3.88 and a 4.12 ring gear?

When a final gear ratio is stated like 3.88, it really is stating that the gear is a 3.88:1 ratio; meaning that for every rotation of the output (usually the wheel) the gear has rotated 3.88 times. So the jump to 4.12 will rotate even more times per wheel turn.

Hope that is what you were wanting the answer for.

Or are you asking what the RPM will be, say at 60 mph, with the 3.88 compared to the 4.12?

Right, so in a nutshell, better street driveability, but higher RPMs on the highway?

Exactly!

It is also possible, to have such a 'tall' gear, that the higher, numerically, the ratio is, first gear can almost be eliminated, because you can't stay in it too long before you have to shift to 2nd.

Also keep in mind that because most of us do not have a 5th gear or overdrive, a 'tall' gear will really hurt the freeway/highway cruising experience. You will have to make sure you have a bullet proof engine to handle the sustained high RPM if you want to drive any considerable distance.

the difference between 3.88 and 4.12 is 0.24 :P

There are 4.37 R&P's too for the type I tranny. real stump pullers. 388 is the strongest of the type 1 R&Ps though, that's what I run ;)
