Post subject: | Taller 4th Gear |
Does anybody have any experience with a "freeway flier" 4th gear? I'm looking at getting a transmission, but I'm undecided on whether to get a stock 4th gear, or a taller 4th. Any input would be great! |

I have read both positive and negative things about them...type 3 gearing is different so the stock tranny's 4th is taller than a type 1 |

i was looking into the freeway flyer when i was building my tranny and from what i read the later gears is the way to go not the freeway flyer due to the freeway flyer just being too far out there driving around town..i have late model gears and i can run as fast as i want on the fwy...70-80 all day no problem |

From the samba.. Ghia had the original freeway flyer trans. The final ratios ware 4.37 for bugs, 4.13 for T-3's and the late Ghia's had a 3.87 final ratio. They all had .88/.89 4th ratio. |

I think I'm going to go with a 4.12 R&P with stock gears. Billy, that's what you have, right? |

Freeway flyer is just a marketing term... figure out what RPM you want to do at what speed and choose a 4th from there, taking into account the R&P you plan to run and the tire diameter. For me, I decided I could live with 3500 RPM @ 65 MPH in 4th, so I went with a 1.04, having already chosen a 3.88 (strongest) R&P and a 25" dia rear tire. Let me know if you need me to calculate it for you, or send you the gearing spreadsheet I made |

i cant remember what year they changed to taller gears 68 maybe that is what mine ended with because i liked how the 69 ran on the fwy with its gears verses my 63 with its gears...the 63 had too much gear for the fwy |
