Hey guys, take a look at the photo below and tell me if it looks correct. It's a 58 beetle, rear driver's side drum. Changed out the seals a while back but still getting oil in the drums causing my rear brakes to be useless. I'm not sure if I should be running the tube style oil slingers (don't currently have them) but it doesn't look like they would sit right in there. I am planning on pulling it apart and throwing some permatex on the seal tomorrow morning (can visibly see oil leaking from around the bottom of the red paper seal) but is there anything else y'all can think of? (EDIT: Yea, I know the brake cylinder is pokin' out on the right side, the photo is old, that problem is fixed.) |

you have the wrong end cap for a 58. if there is no hole drilled in the backing plate you wont be able to stop it from leaking into the hub area. |

Not sure what my end cap should look like..? There is a weep hole in the backing plate that allows oil to sometimes drain over to the inside of the wheel |

thats good that the weep hole is there, that means that someone at least either drilled the hole or they swaped backing plates when they swaped the end cap. see a 58 should not have the weep hole it should have oil slingers in the hub. when you take the end cap off make sure that the drain in the end cap is not plugged up. I like to use black rtv when i put them on.

I guess I'll need to look into the oil deflector washer (called KAR parts, they didn't have any). Dave T brought a couple tube style deflectors over but they didn't look they were going to fit right inside there. I got them at least sealed up with a good gasket and some red rtv... |

I think this the set-up I might ultimately end up with - just need #13 |
