The problem started a couple months ago. I changed out the oil in my 56 transaxle (recently rebuilt), pretty standard. Filled it back up with almost three quarts of Lucas 80-90W gear oil. Afterwards I would occasionally get some grinding shifting into 2nd.
Fast forward to a couple weeks ago. I was doing some work on the rear end and had to pull the covers inside the drums. I had the car supported by the axle tubes so they weren’t completely drooping but there was still a bit of positive camber. When I pulled the covers I must have lost at least a quart of oil.
When I closed everything up I figured I would refill the transaxle next chance I got. Took it for a spin and the 2nd gear grinding seemed to have vanished. I took it on a couple more trips throughout the week to see if it was just a fluke but the grinding never returned - shifts smooth as can be.
Is there anything that can explain why it seems to be shifting smoother with such a low oil level am I just being stupid and ruining my transmission?
