Post subject:  Transaxle rebuild or new
Background. I bought a 1968 Bug (my first bug), its a bit rough but complete except for a motor. I bought a 1835cc dual port motor from GEX but I haven't yet installed it. I've been rebuilding the brakes and axle seals etc. I'm getting closer to installing this motor and now I'm looking closer at my existing transaxle. I might be easier to identify the areas that are not leaking rather than the many areas that are. What would be the process to rebuild this? Is it easier to just buy a new one? I hate to waste a bunch of time installing the new motor only to find out the transaxle has issues beyond the obvious leaks. Does anyone in Houston rebuild these? I see lots of new or rebuild units on the internet but what should I look for? Any advice?

You call that a leak??????? :lol:
Clean it up and see if you can tell where the leak is from. It may just be from the boots. Installing and removing the engine are very easy jobs so dont be afraid of taking it back out if the trans is shot, well worth the gamble over just putting a new one in.

Every now and then a used working swing axle trans will come up for sale. There are a couple of guys around Houston that will probably rebuild one for you. I'm with Ryan, clean it up, fill it up with gear oil and see if you can find where its leaking from. I would change out the rubber boots with good german ones. The chinese ones can leak (from my own experience). Also, I've read about those red trans mounts that you have. Some guys have bad experiences with them, I've never used them. Study up on them, that way if you pull the trans you can replace them.

Again, like Ryan said, pulling the engine and trans isn't that difficult. I'm sure if you post up a date for a work day a couple guys might be willing to help.

A motor from GEX? :shock:
I would be more concerned about that than a little oil leaking from the tranny!

First thing I noticed in your pictures is that the axle boot is installed incorrectly, that could be one of your leaks right there. While you have the motor out it is very simple to remove the tranny and re-seal it. If you are unfamiliar with the process, take it out clean it up and bring it over to my house and I will show you how to re-seal it, It is a simple process. Also I am with Bo ditch the red mounts.

I'm with Brian on the GEX motor.. I'd be a little concerned.. about that..

I'd go with OE transmission mounts.. for sure..

I ran some OE quality boots.. with very little luck.. I am not a fan of everything empi.. but apparently they are widely known for CV and axle boots for other cars also...??? I used a set of their boots and have not an issue with them since.. I was told
some of the stuff in some transmission fluid will eat the rubber pretty bad.. that is what happened to mine..

I moved to redline afterwards also..

I like the look of the OE style boot over those accordion style ones..

ALSO.. I'd look into moving the fuel pump up front.. as that should really be a pusher and not a puller..
or remove it and run stock.. depending on your future plans..

What's everyone's concern with my motor? It is what it is and it is what I got. For better or worse....

The car does have an electric fuel pump remotely mounted in the rear (you can see it in the photos). Do I need an electric pump? What's wrong with the stock pump? Would there have been an engine in this car that needed more fuel than the stock pump could provide? I thought he was blowing smoke but maybe the previous owner was correct when he said the motor he pulled out of the car was running a 4v carb on it.

If your motor has the stock fuel pump then that is what I would use. Some cases don't have a fuel pump so people have to run an electric one.

Nobody is bashing your motor, it's just GEX has far from even a neutral reputation.

As far as the fuel pump goes, I would run a stock pump instead of the electric. I ran a stock pump on a 2110 w/ IDFs for years with no issues.
