For your usage a stock tranny is fine any upgrades to 4th just adds money to the tranny build. So it all depends on what you want to spend. All new tranny's are rebuilt hence the reason they all want a core. Rhino does have an aluminum tranny that you can buy, that is pretty much the only way you are going to get a "New One" (Its not like volkswagen is still producing the swing-axle magnesium cases)but I doubt you want to spend that kind of cash. Now if you are asking should you take the one out and have it rebuilt as apposed to buying a new one, that all depends on the downtime, you will have to take it out and take it to Udo (sp?) he is the only one local enough to drive to that rebuilds tranny around here.

Having him rebuild the one you have will only save you shipping fees on the core. The main issue with that is the down time, plan on your car being down for at least a couple of months. If you order one you have to pay to ship the core back or pay the core fee. I always just pay the core fee. but your down time will only be the day or two to put it in.

As I told you before I would wait until the tranny goes out before id move to change it out. I've purchased every transmission I have ever bought from Rancho. just my 2 cents.

Udo Johnson has my DoubleCab's primary (3-yr old Rancho ProStreet+) and my stock backup right now. Both needed bad bearing replaced and he's gonna upgrade my stock one to match the Rancho's specs.

This is my first try with Udo, but my confidence is high. He's obviously very experienced, knowledgeable, and easy to work with... and I've gotten SO many recommendations for him.

If Udo wasn't available, I'd go back with Rancho again.

Scotty

Rancho for me. Those guys have built more transmissions than probably any other VW shop there is. FWIW, they had to fix several things in my transmission, that was originally built by an "expert" VW transmission builder in Texas (but no, it wasn't Udo).

Red, what I suggest, is to pick up a "core" transmission at a swapmeet or Craigslist or what ever for like $75 bux, and then use it as the core to have a new one built. Then when you swap it into your car you can sell your current one as a core.

What the price range for rebuild? I would expect $600-1200 depending on upgrades you decide on.
How long will it take? Kostya told me that he told Scotty 3 weeks, but while we were at the Monument show David S. said that he was backed up since David Crow stopped building boxes. He has since quit his day job from what I hear and is focusing on just building tranny's.

He got the first one done in 3 weeks. I dont know the cost yet. I told him to put my backup trans job down the list, so he could take care of some Houston shop jobs. I can't pick them up for another 2 weeks.
