To change the IRS (rear) wheel bearings, do you need to remove the stub axle from the arm?

Post up some pics. I haven't had any experience with late model suspensions.

I've been hearing a whirring/slight groaning noise durring decelleration and on freeway ramps while turning left. No noticable noise at slow speeds. Wayne had suggested that it may be the CV's or the bearings. I know my axle nuts are tight. It sounds like too much to do before the classic so I am going to just take it easy. It's not a horrible noise.

What I think I'll do, is buy new bearings in case I need them, and install new 944 axle shafts when I do my conversion sometime in the future. I have all the other parts I need. I'll post up when I get around to working on it.

Upon further diagnosis, I believe the sound is coming from the front passenger side. Noticeable from 45mph and up. Now I have already checked the bearings and hub up there since I was having other brake issues. I will have to check the rest of the suspension. I'm quite baffled about this now. It does it when I'm slowing down and also when turning left...

I had a noise like that in my 69. Turned out to be the cv.

I need a pro with good ears to ride along with me.

Still stumped about this. I've repacked and tightened the front bearings and replaced the pads.

Could an over-tightened rear axle nut cause this?

I've decided to drain and refill the trans fluid. It couldn't hurt since I've never done it... (Ducks head down in shame...)
