that is a great site for stock wiring but what he is doing is not what the factory did. I have never installed a starter relay inline like that but it should be wired as I read it the main battery cable comes from the battery to one side of the starter relay and the other side should go to the big post on the starter, at the same post on the starter there should be a jumper wire going to the small terminal on the starter, the existing wire from the small post should then be moved to the small terminal on the starter relay your installing on The Samba I found one using a standard light group relay Since the battery is connected to the starter solenoid through the ignition switch the distance the voltage has to travel is from the back to the front and back again. The hot start relay cuts down the distance the voltage has to travel. So now it would go from the battery to a relay in the engine compartment back down to the starter. This greatly increase the voltage and amps making it to the starter and not getting lost in the distance and poor wire quality. So the ignition now powers the relay in the engine compartment to connect the battery to the starter. |

This is the relay you would need to do the same hard start relay for a 6Volt system. I just ordered a couple. $2.65 each....not bad. I will hopefully have it installed this weekend and see if it helps my slow starting problem. http://www.newark.com/jsp/search/produc ... KU=21M4888 |

I just bought a 12vdc 40a relay from radio shack got like $5. here is how to wire a relay up: from the switch it goes to the coil on the relay, the other end of the coil in the relay needs to be wired to ground. then you need a heavy gauge wire (10awg should work) from the battery to one side of the switching end of the relay. the other end of the switch in the relay goes to on of the spade terminals on the starter. here is what happens, you turn the key to the start position. That energizes the coil and it switches the relay. now voltage from the battery can go to your solenoid on the starter. Its fairly standard on the numbering for the leads to the relay but I don't have them infront of me right now. I hope that helps, i tried to "dumb" it down a bit for you non-geek types PS: doug posted a beautiful picture that shows exactly what i said, awesome doug |
