that is a great site for stock wiring but what he is doing is not what the factory did.
I have never installed a starter relay inline like that but it should be wired as I read it
the main battery cable comes from the battery to one side of the starter relay and the other side should go to the big post on the starter, at the same post on the starter there should be a jumper wire going to the small terminal on the starter, the existing wire from the small post should then be moved to the small terminal on the starter relay your installing
on The Samba I found one using a standard light group relay
Since the battery is connected to the starter solenoid through the ignition switch the distance the voltage has to travel is from the back to the front and back again. The hot start relay cuts down the distance the voltage has to travel. So now it would go from the battery to a relay in the engine compartment back down to the starter. This greatly increase the voltage and amps making it to the starter and not getting lost in the distance and poor wire quality. So the ignition now powers the relay in the engine compartment to connect the battery to the starter.
