Does anybody know how and whats involved in rebuilding a starter solinoid? And don't tell me to go buy a new one at FLAPS......this is a fairly rare starter. It is a 6V self supporting 12V gear starter for a '66 Karmann Ghia, 6V autostick cars. its an SR13X.

I did mine because when it got hot it would not work - So after removing the starter and taking out the two bolts that hold the solenoid on it comes off a little hook that is part of the bendix.. The cap on the back is screwed in and you'll see that the connection are soldered(sp) in place.. it is easy once you've heated up the solder to remove the cap ..
AS for some problem starters as was with mine.. it was just the brass bar
on the inside of the cap that you'll once it is removed.. the contacts were carboned up like old points from electrical current contacting there.
I cleaned off the build up and put it all back together cleaned up the starter to make it look fresh and new.. reinstalled and have never had a problem since..

I just fixed the solenoid connection issue I was having nothing more.. that I know of was wrong.. There is a write up somewhere I'll find it and post it..
