Yesterday I was taking my '63 ragtop for a test ride from replacing the alternator and all seemed good until I started getting a weird noise from the back. I pulled over and pushed on the rear wheel and it had some movement in/out. The nut was a little loose and, when I pulled the brake drum off, I found this and some broken splines inside the brake drum:

A little history... I've replaced the seal and whatnot on this thing a couple times and can't seem to get it to stop leaking. The second time was alot better but still have a little 'seepage'. I cranked down on the 36mm nut with a breaker bar and everything. As far as I know the cotter pin didn't pull itself out and put itself back in. It sure seemed tight. Was this just due my leaving the nut a little loose or what?

Its VERY important that the rear axel nut is torqued down to 280-300 ft lbs. As far as the seal goes. I like to use a little bit of black rtv sealer on the end cap. you also need to make sure your oil slinger or weep hole is in place.

I was hoping my 170# times 2' of breaker bar would be enough for 340 ft-lbs but I guess not or it was bound up on something.

Just so I get how it works, can I assume the brake drum butts up against the spacer and the spacer moves in the seal as the wheel turns? So the oil slinger pushes any drippage from the seal to the edges of the 'flange' around the axle seal area where it should be directed down and out the weep hole?

I've got a fair amount of tranny oil in and around the brake hardware and on the drum braking surface too. I had to clean up some burrs from the spacer last time. Is it possible it's diameter is too small now?

Hopefully, it just needs more torque. Now to find a new oil slinger... :roll:

63 shouldnt have an oil slinger washer. somebody must have switched end caps on you over the yrs. it should have the oil slingers in the hub. like these

you will need to make sure your backing plate is drilled


edit.... or is that a pic of the actual oil slinger that has been spun on the axel?

I went back and added some stuff to my post, sorry... you're too quick! Yes, the picture is of item 13 in the diagram. It's very possible it's a later trans. The diagram above was representative of what was in there when I opened it up. 'Course that doesn't mean what was in there was correct...

I am very surprised that the oil deflector even came out of the end cap due to the fact that it is oversized. If that set up is what you have you need to make sure that your weep hole is drilled in the backing plate or you will always have oil in your hub area. To torque down the axel nut i recommend using a torque meister if you dont have one you can always borrow mine.

It may be that you are missing the oil slingers like i posted, if you could shoot me a pic of your end cap i could tell better what you have. If your hubs are not drilled for the slinger then who ever owned it last may not have put the slingers in when they replaced the hubs. (this is very common)

I believe our '64 should have the slingers, but at some point the end caps were replaced with ones with the weep-hole. Definitely seeps on both sides.
