Has anyone cut notches in thier spring plates for clearance?

Everything I have read about it says to cut it as smooth as possible, meaning to not have a cut that has a 90 degree turn. Instead have a curving cut. And also weld the cut to strengthen the metal from tearing.

Drill a hole and cut to the hole.
You will only need to notch your plates if you go 3 splines. Be prepared to strip drums. Hopefully Mike60 will chime in. He rolls on bags and has done this before.

I cut mine to clear with no problems. Cut it with a cut off wheel. No welding

I am going 2 notches. I was going to program it in mastercam and cut it on my CNC. If you say it's only for 3 notches I will wait and see if it rides ok. If not I will pull them off again and mill them out later.

Thanks for the info guys.

why not use drop plates and then drop one spline...

Let me see how it rides with 2 notches and no cut out. If I don't like it I will get the drop plates with one notch turn. I had a slammed 63 back in the day. Can't remember how many notches it was lowered. I think it was 2 and when I had friends or fat chicks riding it would hit the spring plates.

Drop plates will give you a much better ride.
