what is the purpose of the two capped openings on top of a steering box and where can I get replacement caps or can I just use a grommet.
my luck, a pebble gets in my tire and gets shot into the hole and my steering locks up in the middle of a turn at sixty.

one is used to adjust the play. the other is used to fill it full of fluid or grease.

I think he talking about the newer box .. there are two plugs ... funny I was looking on the Samba for the same thing. they are filler / vent holes I think. Some of the anwsers were to just go to the local auto parts and find plugs... Let me know when you find some. I need them too.

Great to meet you too. I just hope to learn more and more from others on the board. Soon I will be at the point to start assembly. (i can only take so much off. Hope to have the spindles on the frame and front end this Friday. I was going to do some research on youtube for a video on dropping the rear in case I get that adventurous this weekend. Thanks for all of the advise!!

I was thinking about using a plug similar to this since the openings in the top of the steering box are just vents. Like I said in the original post, I just don't want something to get into these holes.

They were where you get the one above in the body plug area ..

OOH... nice.. I always wanted to drill two very small holes on each side of the engine compartment..
measured up and positioned perfectly for a long thin flat head to adjust dual carbs from under the fender well..

could use these plugs to seal up the holes when not in use..

I think this is a great idea.. if I do say so myself!! :P
