I have a '60 bug that has a rubbing noise coming from the right front of the car. Its a scraping sound as the tire goes around. "schick schick schick schick" I cannot replicate the sound with the car in the air. The sound does not change when the brakes are applied. I cannot see any visible rubbing. I only hear the sound at slower speeds. It isn't a consistent sound. It doesn't always make noise. The noise goes away if I'm turning right, or if I jog the steering wheel to the right. It does seem to be more pronounced when I make a left turn.

WTF?

any ideas??

First thing I would do is inspect the bearings/shoes, then repack them, and adjust the brakes. I would make sure the spindle nut is the proper tightness, and then take her around the block and listen. I had a wheel bearing failure at 70mph when i first got the 914, I would rather not do that again.

sounds like a bearing, with the car down and the bearing under a load, then when you raise it up and take the load off it goes away.
I think they are new bearings arent they?

Replace both inner and outter front wheel bearings. You don't hear it when it's on jacks because there is no weight on the spinndles.

Just my 0.02

Bearings is something to surely look at..

although -And I'm not sure what setup you are talking about ---

but I do know that my ball joint rubbed on my aftermarket gas burner when turning right..
never to the left.. My car basically machined a small amount of clearance in my rim ..
I was amazed that it had any flex up front like it did since everything was brand new and hopefully all properly tightened down...
but it's gone now ..so on with life :hillbilly:

no sorry.. the rubbing is gone.. so I don't worry about it any longer..

and I still have my car.. not going to sale since the car I wanted to get
once my sold is not for sale any longer..

So keeping the fat chick is cool with me.. I like my car a bunch anyways..

In the folder I gave you there should be a receipt for the bearings and seal I put on there. Pretty sure I got them from NAPA, but might have been from CQ. Either way I should be able to get them warrantied if you want to try the bearings out.

Mine is doing the same thing since I installed the BRMs! Hmm. Wish here was a fix rather than waiting or it to solve itself lol!
