Well, I guess I am the first post in here!? :? w:pw I know I asked you Ethan, but I just want to make sure I have this right and don't screw it up. I installed a new steering gear box on my 69. Kermit told me to fill it with 90 wt gear oil. When I popped the plugs in it I see that it is filled with grease. Does this thing take gear oil? Should I just put some better grease in it? Should I not do shiza? Also, are they pre adjusted out of the box? This thing feels really stiff.

Ive seen em filled with just plain ole grease. Then you dont have to worry about the fluid leaking.

Grease it is  . How much? Now, for my second question. Are they pretty tight when new? Should I have to adjust it at all?

I belive you just fill it full as it'll go and turn it a few times then check it again. Far as it being tight thats prolly just from it being new and not much use on it.

Wait for concreteace to chime in on it. He should know more bout non powered steering boxes.

a manual box shouldnt have to be done anything but install that I have ever done anyway as for adjusting it should be pre adjusted and shouldnt need to be adjusted until it starts to wear which should be several years from now

Ok, after the poker run it seems that the gear box is nice and tight, but I seem to have the same amout of play in the steering wheel  . Everything in the front end is new now. Maybe I was expecting to much, but it just seems to handle weird. The main issue I have is for example, wne I make a slight left or right turn the bug will want to jerk over that direction instantly. So, I try to counter steer and it wants to jerk back the other direction. For those who drove behind me on the poker run I bet I looked like I was all over the place durring those long sweeping turns. Maybe I just need to drive another bug and see how different mine is, or maybe someone needs to drive mine and see what they think. i just don't think it should handle this way. :help:

That sounds like a good idea before you go any further with it.

Have you taken it in to get aligned?
do you have a steering dampener?
