several guys on here installed a ragtop clip in their hardtops. It can be done so that you can't tell it's not original, if you have enough of the clip to work with.

I have put a ragtop clip in almost every VW that I have owned.

Just FYI, if you even care, 56 had a one year only ragtop, if you are concerned about "correctness." The difference between the 56 and 57 and up is that in 56 the rear two corners of the canvas were square and the front two were round, starting in 57 all 4 corners were round. Im not sure about potential differences in the mechanism that would be "incorrect," but I'm sure it would be easy enough to get the more common 57-up ragtop to look like a 56. Fifty five and down is a totally different story...

just to add more to Brians comment. If your car is a late 56 it would have round corners all around. The biggest misconception is that the 56 has a one year only ragtop. It should really be said that the square cornered ragtop was only available on 56 year models.

from progressive refinments
In May 1956 at chassis # 1 181 041 the sunroof had multiple changes made to it, the most visible was 4 rounded corners. This continued to the end of the 1963 USA version and much longer on European versions.

If you do have a car that was built before may and you want the ragtop to look correct it is easy to make it correct as Brian said.

Funny that you mention that, I was just reading the same thing in "Oval Window Handbook," by Rich Kimball. So yeah, if you do care about it being correct, you will need to figure out when in 56 your car was made. Either way, most people wont know the difference, or care, lol.
