So recently I've been having an issue with gas pumps. Twice now, at different stations, the pump has not shut off like it should.

What happens is that it is filling too much and spraying gas all over myself and the outside of the car. Normally, I have the opposite problem where it will shut off too soon because of the large filler neck. I can tell that it is sealing, because there is a "hiss" as the pump vents, but usually the pressure is what shuts off the pump... I do not overfill by "topping off".

Anyone else having this issue? I don't like raw gas on my paint! :furious:

Sorry, I have to look down into the tank to see the level. :D

Well this last time when it happened, after I took the nozzle out, the level was so high up the filler neck that I could reach in and touch it!

Ive never let it fill automatically in any of my VW's. I generally manually fill it while watching the level rise.

How exactly do you watch it?

Lol I keep forgetting you have a Super. Early cars you have to open the hood to fill and it's easy to look

Well I listen to the tank... If I know it is empty, at about 8 of gallons I watch and go slow.. It still sometimes splashes back.

On my car the openign in the gas tank is about 4 inches in diameter, so I can see exactly what's going on, lol.

I just happened to think... don't Supers have all those charcole canisters and controlled venting of the gas tank? If something is wrong with all that crap, you could be pulling a vaccuum on your tank under high flow conditions and that could cause your problem. Try running the car without the gas cap and see if the problem goes away. Seriously.
