I got some sad news the other day from my friend Darren Gurrola, aka the founder of DRD Racing heads. After 18 years in the business and making arguably the best heads in the VW industry, Darren is moving on. He said the market has been shrinking over many years, sales have been flat, and he's ready to move on and start a new chapter in his life.
Luckily for the VW community, Empi is buying his machines and port designs, so "DRD Designed Heads" should still be available. He's going to start training them on how to run his equipment to make his CNC ported heads in the next week or so.
I'm not sure if he's still taking orders or not, but if anyone was wanting anything from him, better check with him ASAP!

Brian

Well, I hate to hear this. I really liked his cylinder heads and was looking forward to using them on future builds. We'll have to wait & see what EMPI does with this....

Well, they're buying his machines and designs, and he's going to train them on it all, so hopefully they can at least continue producing his current offerings. Time will tell though...

What's more sad is that the industry is shrinking. BugPack a few years ago, now DRD, I'm sure there have been others, and will be more. It's funny to think about, but even later cars like 60's models are now in their 50's, they're antiques! And young people these days for the most part aren't interested in even owning cars, much less building and maintaining an antique. They're rather just grab an Uber.
I don't think the hobby is going to ever go away completely, but it will continue to shrink and hence availability of parts will go down and prices will go up.
