Sux to waste a trip, but at least you're not the one caught with that issue. ;)

did one of the vin plates match the title? the one under the hood or the one under the back seat....

Nope, the nose had been clipped. The plate that goes behind the spare tire was missing and the 5? numbers that were stamped above or below the area where the plate goes didnt match anything. The numbers stamped under the back seat come back to a Feb 1959 type 1, according to the list on Samba.
So yeah, it's possible the car is hot. Not saying it is, but there's an issue. The seller didn't seem shady at all, and looked shocked when I showed him the discrepancy. He agreed that there was an issue and said that he would get it taken care of.

that sucks. for future reference, the number stamped into the front, right above (and usually behind) the vin tag is the body number. it won't match anything. early cars the beam would have been stamped, the trans, other things too.

What did you end up buying?

I think mine is more of an "art car" than that lol.

Did any of you see the Porsche 356 art car? Sunroof too. It had a few bumps and bruises underneith but I just sat there in shock when I saw it
