Scotty, what did you end up finding out, anything?
If it makes you feel any better, it looks like my motor is going together with 4 shims this time. I need .047" worth of shims, can't do that with 3... Funny thing is, last time I put the motor together it did only use 3. I guess the new bearing's thrust is a little thinner. Damn, VW parts, lol. Anyway, 3 is just the minimum, more than 3 doesn't hurt anything

Yeah...that does help. I've done a good bit of reading up on it and I am OK with 4 shims, but I'd sure like to know where the extra clearance is coming from. I did finally acquire a few more shims, so I can move forward now. Work, family, friends and golf takes up most of my time... and a general lack of motivation sucks up the rest  Plus, the DC is running fine, so I get my VW fix anytime I want.

I am totally looking forward to driving the ol' stocker around, so I'll get 'er done sometime soon.... just not at the top of my priorities right now.

Well, like I said in my case, it was for sure the difference from one bearing to another: same flywheel and same crank. Same brand of bearings and everything. So much for quality control, lol
