My engine isn't shimming out as expected.... way too much endplay with 3 shims. With 4, I can get it dialed in, but it shouldn't take 4 to do the trick. Something ain't right.

After talking with a couple of folks, it may be this aftermarket flywheel. I'm going to do some measuring... but it looks like I may actually need a good OG 36hp flywheel.

BTW, I'm using some nice OG Kolbenschmidt main bearings, so that shouldn't be the issue.

I wouldn't worry about using 4, three is just the minimum. Parts suck these days, something is off, don't lose sleep over it

Yea--once it starts oiling back there your "flat bearing" the shims should be fine at 4..

I did it once on a motor a long time with a friend for simple lack of a proper assortment of shims..
working in others shops sometimes stinks.. but that motor is still running today.. just fine..

Brian/tommie... thanks for the input.

It's probably fine, but I can't help myself...... I'm gonna get my hands on a good German flywheel and see how it measures up.

Let us know what you find out
When you tore it apart did it have 4 shims?

I think the answer is yes.... but I don't remember   ... I have 5 shims total between this engine and a core shortblock.

One of the shims is .035" which I'm told is a Porsche 356 shim --they only use 1 thick shim. The other 4 are .011" or .012", and all 4 of those are what I'm using now to get .004 endplay. I did check the endplay befor I tore it down... it was good -- .005".

Looks to be a "loose" .005
I agree though I would try to make it as close to right as possible.

Scotty, what did you end up finding out, anything?
If it makes you feel any better, it looks like my motor is going together with 4 shims this time. I need .047" worth of shims, can't do that with 3... Funny thing is, last time I put the motor together it did only use 3. I guess the new bearing's thrust is a little thinner. Damn, VW parts, lol. Anyway, 3 is just the minimum, more than 3 doesn't hurt anything
