Evan,

Excellent. You didn't paint the beetle did you? Saw a cream colored one the other day that looked like yours. Give me a call if you get a chance or stop by... the ragtop is running!

I ran into to Mr. John the electric beetle guy today at a car show in Alvin. He and possibly some more of the electric car club guys are supposed to be coming to the show. It's definately worth dropping by to see it. His car looks alot better now that it's painted up in interstate battery green and black. The bug was originally saved from rotting in one of his neighbor's fields.

90 hp motor with a bunch of batteries in the back seat. About a 50 mile range. Pennies to recharge. He insulated the whole interior and has plans to put in A/C for the summer. He also installed some JC Whitney 700 lb helper springs in the rear to level it out. The batteries add about that much weight to it. I really enjoyed talking to him. He's a thinker and a doer and great at both.

I took some pics but I was using the old 35mm camera today so I still have to drop the film off but here's an old pic and a link to some more:

My neighbor has a book that maps that conversion out. He's been trying to get me to do that to my oval :nono:

Makes for an expensive grocery getter. They need to build some inexpensive batteries that have a better range before this will be popular. We'd need a couple of $4/gal gas years for that to happen. I'd bet someone has made them but they are probably made from unobtainium hydride and not affordable to anyone but NASA and Bill Gates (and maybe not even him now that the stock market's crashed. :help:)

PS Still interesting though. You never know, a breakthrough in battery technology and we may all be jumping on the bandwagon.

Yes, the 50 mile range is not impressive. I would run out of power before I made just about any get-together around Houston. And if I could make one at 40 miles distance, I would need a re-charge before I headed home. You are right...only thing they are good for at this point is doing the local grocery shopping.

I should be caught up at work soon. I'm planning on going. Anyone else wanting to go? If so maybe we can get a cruise to the show going.
