The So Cal Treffen was this year (Every other year it is in Nor Cal). Paul and Chuck came out and we had a great weekend. Our weekend Started with a visit to Gene Berg, about a mile from my House. We chatted with Al and Dee for a while and snapped off a few pics in their shop and of Dee's Split.

Dee's 51. Dee drives the heck out of this car.

Crazy looking dune buggy thing residing in the shop. Looks like its been sitting there since the 60's...

Dee was nice enough to show us some of her amazing VW toy and collectable collection. She has several of most things... a couple shipping containers full plus everything that's packed in the building. Impressive to say the least.

As luck would have it, Al and Dee told us about a VW museum in Orange, a few miles from my house, that belongs to the famous Schley Brothers. A quick phone call to Mark Schley and we made arrangements to go see it the following day...

Saturday, we made the short trip, basically down the street, to the Schley Brother's museum, which is housed in Paul Schley's work shop. Apparently the brothers have done well for themselves with SP Tools...

The Treffen Saturday Rally was passing through when we got there, this was one of the cars participating in the rally...

Yes, that's a REAL Cobra.... like I said, I guess the brothers have done well...

Mark Schley with Paul and Chuck...

And with me...

Back in the day, there was no VW performance aftermarket, so they had to make their own "go fast parts." That connecting rod is a 36 horse big end welded to 40 horse small end, they were stroking 36 horse cranks, but needed to use pistons with the larger pins of a 40 horse. They only had factory 1.1:1 rockers, so they modified them to give higher rations.

This was I think the most impressive thing they had made: a dual port head made from a single port. Remember, back when these guys started out in the 60's, there were no dual port heads. So they made their own with what they had.

The museum I think was the highlight of the weekend, I could have spent all day there. Mark Schley was an incredible host and chatted with us for a long time. Unfortunately, his brother Paul was out of town, so we didn't get to meet him.

And finally, the Treffen itself. I have to say, it was a bit disappointing compared to the 2009 and 2011 shows. The oldest car there was a 47 beetle, there were no kdf cars, no war cars (Kublewagens and Schwimwagens), no Hebs, only a couple coach builts, only about 3 Barn Doors... I'm not sure why the attendance was down this year...
Anyway, here's the pics, I think I got the majority of cars, at least most of the good ones, or ones that had something about them I liked.

Nice job Brian. Looks like it was a great trip. The Berg/Schley visits would've been enough for me to call it a good trip.

Nice pics Chuck. Thanks for coming out here, that was fun. I don't know how I missed that 4 door bug, that thing is pretty sweet!
