So today I got to sift through the boxes of parts that the PO of my Loaf had shipped me. I found two treasures. Two NOS thermostats. I am fascinated with the stock VW thermostat system and thought I would love to have the working system back on my bus. I know, I know we dont need it here in Texas because its hot...Well I was reading about them on Ratwell and saw this:

"So there is a complex relationship between the oil temperature, the thermostat and the cylinder head temperature. Don't try to outsmart the VW engineers who worked on that engine design for 40 years. Granted they built an engine to be driven in all climates but if they could have saved $5 by leaving the part off, they would have done so and saved millions of dollars."

Good enough for me....

More diggin through boxes produced two thermostat brackets and all of the smaller hardware to make one complete system.

Here's where my idiocy shines through.
I wanted to try the stove top boiling water test to see if the thermostats worked, so I got it all set up and stuck a little thermometer in the water to monitor the temp while it heated up. The thermostats were marked to begin expanding at 85-90 degrees. (you may be able to see where this is going). So on goes the stove. In goes the thermostat. Water starts heating up. It gets to what my thermometer read 85 degrees and nothing happened......

I tried the other thermostat...nothing. So I just kinda lost interest for a minute and put everything down to go drink a beer.
I read some more of the Ratwell stuff on line and then it hit me....This is America....we use Fahrenheit....that was Germany, they use Celsius. I am a moron.

A quick Google revealed that 85C=185F. I never let the water get that hot on the first test.

Long story short, another test to 185 degrees F and they both work. Amazing.

This is Texas.....you should have put it in a smoker with some pecan and oak, and maybe a nice dry rub :)
