What is the deal with these plates? Do you have to check with the state and see if the number is already in use? If used is the car regestered as a antique? I am already running antique plates, so can I just switch over?

They got to inspect the plates, you pay some fees, and you get a new title with yom plate number. It will still be antique.

Along with what ninja said;
Yes the DMV makes sure the number set are not in use and that you have BOTH plates in your possession.

They can also sometimes be pickey about the condition of the plates. Don't try to bring them some ratty looking plates, they will probably reject them.
