i have a 58 beetle and i want to bypass the petcock and i need to know if the threads on the bottom are the same size as a 61 and later model gas tank? i plan on putting in a gas gauge so i have no need for a reserve.

They should be. What are you trying to do?

They make AN fittings that screw right on the tank fitting, that's what I used to eliminate my reserve when I added a gauge.

They are the same. When I got my 61 it did not have the reserve lever it had a later one on it. If your reserve cog is still good use them both. Have a reserve and a fuel gage.

I agree on keeping it unless you are going to run AN fittings and bigger lines. It's a neat feature!

Yeah, you can keep it, it doens't hurt anything, unless you're planning on making over ~180 hp or so...

After reading the op I have no idea why I asked what you were trying to do.

ok, part two the fuel tank question. my car never can equipped with a fuel gauge i want to add one and i am unsure if need to get a new tank (later model that has a spot for a sending unit) or if i can add one to my original tank. we are talking about a 58 bug with stock and original tank.

They do not make a tank for your year with a sending unit and you can not use a later tank due to the opening size. you will need to add your own sending unit. and yes you can add one.
