I have not done anything on the car during the summer period. Hopefully I will start within the next month.

Car is for sale as is. If anybody from here is interested kindly let me know.

W 1303 GERMAN LOOK 2,7ltr Price: 20000 Euros VW Beetle / Kafer 1303 LHD – BLACK
Engine Conversion: Type IV 2,7 ltrs
Sold from new in GREECE, car with no rust.
Restored from bumper to bumper with NOS parts.

About me: As a big enthusiast of classic air cooled VW’s I have owned several beetles in the past. My projects are all at professional level. I am not a dealer in need to roll cars in order to make money what so ever. The time and money I invest into my projects are absolutely not worth it from the business point of view. It is all about the passion!

About my engine choice: As we all know, a type I engine has not the same grunt as a big type IV cc engine therefore I decided to build a brand new type IV engine. In my personal opinion a type IV engine is the best choice for an air-cooled VW mainly due to her strength and her ability to cruise at big speeds for a very long period of time. The engine has been built having in mind the performance of those beautiful German Kafer cup cars of the early 90's. Back in those days these engines were designed for racing & not for street use. They were used to all sorts of race-beetles with great results. I absolutely respect type IV engines. There are the ultimate 4 cylinder air-cooled engines of all time! I have driven a lot of strong air cooled VWs over the years but the first time I sat behind a type IV powered beetle, everything has been to put to another perspective. As a kid I was inspired from various tuners such as Gene Berg, CB performance, Fat Performance, etc but that was before my introduction to the world of fast circuit beetles. Then all the names changed in my address book and new ones were introduced such as Udo Becker, Klaus, Tafel, Remmelle, GWD, etc.

Exterior:Black high quality paint application. The body is completely rust free with no damages. The car has been refinished using OEM "Glasurit" paint. If you will see the pictures before the restoration you will notice that the car had the classic VW orange colour. Not really my cup of tea. We have change everything with: all new rubber mouldings, new euro head & rear lights, front & rear new oem white turn lenses, all new oem emblems, new front & rear wings, new running boards and finally new front & rear bumpers. Since this extensive restoration has started the car has been always garaged.

Interior: Brand new OMP Strada bucket seats, new MOMO black leather steering wheel, all new interior bulbs, Original VW 1303 cluster has been customized to match the engines performance. Stack performance gauges have been placed in order to monitor what’s happening at the engine compartment (Oil pressure, Oil temperature, Voltmeter & tachometer with integrated shift light). Furthermore we have placed power windows and an E30 M3 interior mirror that has adjustable map lights (nice trick). I forgot to tell you that the dash is fully upholstered with red leather. The original VW rear bench has been thrown away and a modified 944 turbo rear seat has taken its place. Now the interior feels like a true sports car. This is the interior that VW should have made back in the 70’s - early 80’s.

Drive train / Engine specs: is a legendary type IV Porsche 914 injection case. Some people within the German Look scheme believe that this is the strongest case, therefore I followed their advice. After a lot of machining the case now houses a brand new SCAT 80mm crankshaft, 103mm JE pistons covered with TOTAL SEAL rings on brand new iron cylinders. The cylinder heads have been heavily reworked by the legendary Udo Becker with 50mm inlet valves & 42mm exhaust valves. All components in the cylinder heads such as retainers, lifters and such are made of titanium in order to minimize the weight but maximize the strength within the heads. The compression is set @ a highly respectable ration of 11.9:1. The camshaft is a special order from PAUTER. The cooling of the above monster is taken care of by an 11 blade PORSCHE fan that originally cooled a 930 turbo 6 cylinder engine. Breathing is taken care of by a twin set of Weber Alpha 48mm throttle bodies. All Porsche derived powerful air-cooled engines have dry sumps. This is the case here as well. A front mounted oil cooler help the oil stay at reasonable temperatures. The engine has been completely rebuilt with ONLY new hard ware / parts.

Transmission: Since the car is a GERMAN LOOK only one name comes up and that is PORSCHE. As part of the 911 creation (car), Porsche created an all new 5speed transmission which became known as the 901 transmission. The initial version utilized cast aluminium housing with later models having cast magnesium housing. The shift pattern is considered to be odd with reverse at the top left and first on the bottom left (dogleg) but back in the 70’s up until the late 80’s this dogleg shift pattern was adopted by many makers including Ferrari, BMW, Mercedes, etc. 901 were used frequently in Porsche racing cars partially due to the wide selection of gears that were available and of course for their well proven strength. My tranny has been extensively rebuilt and now shifts nice and tight. Gears do not grind. New seal have been placed and there are no oil leaks. New 230lbs Kennedy clutch and new Porsche 901 single mass 11 pounds fly wheel. It is not very straightforward to fit a 901 – 215mm flywheel transmission into a beetle. There is a company with legendary status for their transmission conversion kit. From http://www.bugat5speed.de/ I bought all necessary parts in order to make this swap as factory oriented as possible and believe me the end result is simply breathtaking.

Brakes: The above monster engine creates lots of power; therefore stopping ability is a big MUST. Front brakes are 6 piston calipers that came from a 996 GT2. Rear brakes are 4 piston calibers and came from a 964 Carrera. Everything works perfectly. Kerscher special parts have been used which are perfectly designed to integrate Porsche brakes into a beetle.

Suspension: In order for this car to take advantage of the engine & braking power a strong race suspension needs to be fitted. My choice was a brand new set of KW Variant coilovers all around. Furthermore a Unibal GWD system has been installed at the rear end. Aluminum strut brace at the front & a Kafer cup brace at the rear play a major role in this set up.

Wheels: PORSCHE 911 Cup I - 7,5 x 17 "dressed" with brand new Continental tires

What kind of exhaust? Definitely one of my favorite parts but NOT there yet. The plan is to use a Porsche 911 single pipe rear muffler with high performance header 4-2-1 all stainless steel these kinds of systems are being used by highly respectable tuners in the scene such as Remmelle, GWD and others. With such an exhaust these kinds of engines flow amazingly & produce long & steady torques. The sound from such a system is very good with a deep sound similar to big cc 911 air cooled engines.

What needs to be done? Engine is currently sitting on the bench (not on the car). We have not fitted the throttle bodies & the ECU on the engine. The idea was to originally “run” the engine for the first 5000km on carbs and then buy & place the ecu with the throttle bodies in order to program them on the dyno. New wiring loom needs to be made. The 911 fan has not been fitted on the engine, the dry sump has not been fitted; the oil radiator has not been fitted, the oil lines have not been fitted, the oil breather box has not been fitted, the above exhaust system has not been fitted. All parts are waiting in their boxes but not fitted on the car YET.

Let's find out how fast the car is? Well I can not tell you anything about my car in particular but these kind of cars are really fast. Definitely not as fast as a 996/997 turbo but FAST ENOUGH. I have a good friend of mine who also happens to be the mechanic of this project. He is the most respectable VW / Porsche air-cooled specialist here in Athens. He has surprised lots of M3's & M5's with his own big cc GL. In general, big cc GL’s are super fun and fast to drive and make you always smile.

About this 1303 GL project: My goal was to build a recreation of a true German Kafer cup car. This project has taken approximately 7 years, 3 girlfriends, and one marriage and still is I N C O M P L E T E. The car is not 100% done. I have spent hundreds & hundreds of hours on this project! I got tired counting and dumped the notebook I used to record the hours & the money spent for this dream GL. Not to mention that counting the hours & the money was worthless. The quality of the parts and the workmanship on this project shows that this was NOT a 2 weekend fast swap. The good thing is that all parts needed to finish this project are in my garage.

Why I am selling this beautiful car? I came so close finishing this project but unfortunately that never happened. I started this project alone and now I have a family. My wife nags that such a car is only for me and not for the whole family to enjoy therefore I must let it go. The true reason though is that for once more they have changed the taxation law here in Greece.

What is the asking price? The car itself, big cc Porsche Type IV derived engine, Porsche tranny, big Porsche brakes, KW coilover suspension all around, rear unibal GWD, complete body restoration, custom work, tons of NOS parts, and the fact that I have spent so much time and money on this project, the investments exceeds the 40k mark (Euros). On the other hand in order to complete this precise job, time & money should not count! The quality of this car will show when somebody will finish it & roll it to a show or much better to a circuit. I am offering this project for the low price of 20k (Euros). OFFER ARE ACCEPTED NEAR/BY THE ASKING PRICE OR TRADE WITH ANOTHER BEETLE. If you think my price is actually high as much as a very clean 3.2 or 964 Carrera with super low miles, WELL IT IS TRUE, but my opinion is that such a 1303 is a lot more rare, unique and fun to drive compared to some regular 3.2 & 964’s seen on every corner and stop light.

Cheers Dimitris
