Hello dLk! My name is Phil, I have owned and rebuilt VW's since 1995. I living in Woodlands/Conroe area and drive a 1954 Oval (Stratos Silver). I bought the car in 2011 and began the tear down/rebuild process in April of 2012. The car was back on the road in 2015 and I drive it as much as possible. I rebuilt the 36hp engine with a DPR CW crank, performance cam, WW Okrasa heads (ported/polished and flycut), and dual Italian 36IDFs. Runs great for a 1192cc engine

My first car was 1971 Super Beetle and I have owned 6 other VW's since. I look forward to meeting others are the next meeting or show. Hopefully these pictures work.

Welcome! Beautiful car!!! That's the OG color of my car, I think it's one of the best VW colors there is!
I'm digging the old speed style 36 horse. I would imagine it does pretty well for a 36'er. :thumbs: :beer:

Thank you for the comments, I wish I had better pics than Iphone pictures.

I was torn between Stratos Silver and Ultra Maroon (originally the car was black).

36hp engines are like sewing machines, and with everything balanced it is a sweet running engine. The cam pushes the power to the upper RPM's so 1500-2500 is still a bit sluggish, but it wakes up nicely for a 36hp engine. It's not fast by any means, but runs very well and will cruise all day at 70-75mph.

I have two regrets, should have had DPR stroke the crank to 69mm and should have bought 36DRLA's versus 36IDF's. DRLA's have extra progression holes which would have assisted in smoother operation from idle to 2500 rpms.

On Monday I am sending the car to Caney Creek Collision for some touch up and modifications (removing stock weather strip clip for decklid).

I wish I would have found those guys back in 2012 when I was painting the car. Body work is my least favorite activity, but it came out good for garage/driveway paint job.

I have been contemplating selling/trading it for an early Ghia, but it's such a smooth running car I hate to do it. It is rare to find a VW that has been taken care of like mine has been over the years. Original metal, pans, etc, the body has never been separated from the pans. It also helps that it spent most of it's life in CA and Lubbock, TX

I got my car back from Jason and Jeremy at Caney Creek Collision. Everything turned out great...it will be going back to them in Spring to modify the front weatherstrip and take care of some touchup
