Some of you may remember my garage in Houston. Although I kept it clean, it was a pretty dank place with ugly walls, an ugly floor, ugly ceiling, it was just ugly. Since we weren't planning on staying there for ever, I never bothered doing much to improve it. But I always told myself my next garage would be nice.
Enter our house here in Orange. The garage was anything but nice! It only had two outlets, and someone had "wired" the garage with extension cords that had the ends cut off and connections made by twisting the wires together and covering them with Scotch tape!
So here are the before pictures...
I started the project by tearing out all the crumby built in shelves and benches, they looked like it had been done by a 5 year old! I gutted it! Next I re-wired the whole thing from scratch. I put in about 8 outlets. It also needed some proper lighting, I like working with lots of light. So I wired in 3 8-ft fluorescent lights. Next came drywall. After the drywall came primer and several coats of paint. The garage is pretty small, only 17' X 19', so I wanted as little as possible on the floor. I put about 2 1/2 sheets of plywood up in the rafters for storage and several shelves on the walls to keep stuff off the floor. I also re-did the cabinets that were already in there. They needed lots of filler to smooth them our and new hardware. Meredith framed a bunch of old VW adds for me to decorate the walls with. The final steps, which I just did this weekend, were to epoxy coat the foundation footer and put in a floor. After much thought, I decided to go with Garage Deck flooring. They are 12" square and about 1/4" thick. They just snap together, no messing with glue prep of the original floor. I'm pretty happy with the result. I've been working on the garage on-and-off for about a year. About the only thing left on the garage is to paint the old fan that's in the window you can see in some of the pictures. It still works!
