today's progress and setbacks
carbs removed, orange permatex gaskets removed (ugh!). The solex shafts need help. I can feel a small grove, I can see some air gaps. One side has a black split shaft block, the other completely missing. This is what makes split shaft carbs actually work correctly. I rigged it best I could without new ones. I'm hesitant to spend much time on these, because I think it will be worth it to me to swap to Dell 36's or 40's if I can find a nice pair. I'm getting quotes of $1K and up to fix these. New timing light is awesome (Hooray tools!) at 950 idle its back about 3 degrees, 30 at 3K rpm's, so seems that my distributor is good. Thats good. New gaskets, added carb to manifold spacers (not sure there was even room for the split shaft to work without them...). Tightened down #1 exhaust (the rest need tightening too, but that was the worst)
because of the butterfly to shaft gaps and a little side to side play, I've still got a little popping and sputtering, and coming down to idle is an issue. also messed with the linkage a bunch. I don't own a carb snail yet, better get one, I'll need it for the dells too. Hopefully, tomorrow I can get to the brake lines and take it for a little test drive. I've still only driven around the block, once
anyway, video below. You can hear exhaust leak and how long it takes to bounce down to idle
