I think I had some of the same problems you are having when I got my 60. Sloppy shifting and ocassionally the shifter would physically spin around. What it turned out to be on mine was for a 60 you should have a 36hp with a split case transmission. If someone has in the past adapted a tunnel trans in it, they had to use a different nose cone and hockey stick.
Qoute from Bill May on Samba when he was helping with my issue
when a splitcas trans is replaced with a tunnel case it is done using a bus nosecone and hockey stick. a bus has its coupler on bottom of hockey stick instead of on top like a beetle-i am talking about the detent for the coupler set screw. if it is not drilled in correct location it will twist coupler out of alignment and cause exact problem you are having. i think the detent is not in correct spot as it should be drilled to adapt the hockey stick(bus) to the coupler(beetle and bus) and shift rod is twisted out of alignment.--- fix=?? replace hockey stick or redrill yours in correct spot. 180 degrees from original bus location.

That wood screw in your coupler makes me think this is where your problem is gonna be at.

Good Gawd Mike!! :wow:

I sure wish I would have read this earlier. :furious: :furious: We spent most of today F'n with this and now reading what you've wrote sounds like this is what I'm going to find. I'll be over there again tomorrow to work on it again. Now, at least I know where to start. Man, THANK YOU a lot for sharing your pain with me. I'll be sure to post right away when we look at it.

I would make sure you have a bus nose cone first.

Absolutely. From the picture of the front mount area, it appears you have a later model transmission. But with the mount thats welded in there, theres no telling what they used to make it fit. Is the transmission bolted directly to the plate thats welded in there? Kinda looks like a homemade mid mount.

Yes, it is.. What keeps stumping me is that it's shifting fine when the cars not running... Doesn't that mean everything is lined up OK??

This could cause the problem that you describe

Made some progress on Mikes car today. Thanks Philly for helping out  We pulled the motor and it looks like the pressure plate may be the culprit. That being said the transmission is still in there whack but Mike says it shifted before so maybe it'll work for a bit. He says he doesn't have long term aspirations for this one?? We're gonna try to get it back together in the next few days  Here's some pictures from today and last night.

Brandon doing what he does best ;) He could give Chuck some tips :redguy:

From what I see in that second video, you still have the original 60 one year only nose cone mount in place and that tells me the reason your tranny is so whacked is that they probably never changed the front nose cone to a bus nose cone. In my opinion I would cut that nasty mid mount out of there, order yourself a new front nose cone mount and a bus nose cone and hockey stick and that will more than likely fix the angle of the transmission. Pretty much there is only two ways to fit a later tranny in a 60 model. One.. swap nose cone and hockey stick for a bus unit. Two.. weld in later front nose cone mount. Since the original 60 mount is in there I would bet that your nose cone is a type one.

Well , I would say that the thingey is not the right thingey to that car and you should at least change it out or get another thingey so that the thingey will work correctly.

Just sayin!!
