I was wondering where in the dallas area I could get a tune up for my 74' beetle? Or is there just a list of things that I could check and tweak myself?

The "Idiot Book" is a great resource. You should be able to do a simple tun up yourself, with common hand tools. Change the spark plugs, plug wire, distributor cap, rotor, condensor, and points, a new coil may or may not help too. While you're at it, the air cleaner, and fuel filter. Check your vaccuum lines for cracks or loose fitting on their connectors, and check the condition of the fuel lines. Adjust the valves too if you're up to it (a little more advanced). Those relatively simple tune-up items can do wonders for how a VW runs.
Good luck, and don't hesitate to ask plenty of questions if you get stuck

Go to Black Gold on Division in Arlington. Jack will treat you right if he can get to it.

I am fortunate to have a local guy with 40 years of VW experience.

I had some work done a couple of weeks ago on my '66 Sedan at Earl Mann's Bug Shop in Ardmore Oklahoma. They do some great work. I saw about 3 cars in the shop being restored. I needed the valves adjusted on mine and it runs noticeably better now. I also had an electronic distributor installed.
