The "Idiot Book" is a great resource. You should be able to do a simple tun up yourself, with common hand tools. Change the spark plugs, plug wire, distributor cap, rotor, condensor, and points, a new coil may or may not help too. While you're at it, the air cleaner, and fuel filter. Check your vaccuum lines for cracks or loose fitting on their connectors, and check the condition of the fuel lines. Adjust the valves too if you're up to it (a little more advanced). Those relatively simple tune-up items can do wonders for how a VW runs.
