The prices are 70 to align bore, 20 to cut the thrust, and 76 for the crank if yours can still be fixed. If not there is a slight core charge on the crank.

Thanks Andy!

Well after taking the crank adn bearings over to Ryan's house, Ryan suspects that the PO shut the engine off so abruptly, that the crank did not suffer enough damage as to require machining. So I willbe hitting the surfaces lightly, with some emory cloth and slap a new set of bearings on it.

Does anybody know if it is worth it to get the case savers put in at this point (since its torn down)? What's the ballpark cost for this service? It is a AE block ('71), so just shy of the year they started doing the case savers.

With your plans for the engine I would not do it. You are going back stock and not HP. You are running the 10mm studs now and with the savers you would also have to buy new 8mm studs. I dont think it is a cost you need right now for a temp engine, you and I both know that when you get your car on the road you will want to build a big engine!

I decided I would try some cleaning on the case to get ready for re-assembly. I heard that toilet bowl cleaner was a good grime remover so I hit the case with it. it foamed up pretty well and I made sure not to breathe in the fumes. I then hosed down the case with water to see my results. I noticed a lot came off and so thinking the way most guys do, 'a little bit is good, more is better' so I poured more on. The case started to foam again and then I noticed a little smoke. Then FLAMES!!! Luckily the flames popped up very briefly and wasn't fueled by the magnesium! Thank goodness! So I will not be using toilet bowl cleaner on the case anymore....

So what's your process? Does the oven cleaner cause corrosion?

 good to know. might be good to post a pic of the product and its ingredients in the tech dept so that no one else uses it.

Yeah I was about to freak out and run for the fire extinguisher. Not sure if the home extinguisher would even be useful for magnesium fires!

Next option was to grab the shovel and start digging in the yard for some dirt, I guess...
