When you rebuilt the reg. you should have gone with the kit that you can knock the pressure 5 psi & below Alot of people don't know about that kit and some does that have ran them for years. One my IDA's I ran 3 to 3.5 psi from the reg. to carbs and 7-8 psi from the tank to reg. Damn I had a kit few months ago, but I gave it away. Their around $8.00
So whats your psi from the tank (pump) to the regulator? But what your using on your car I've ran on my daily driver, but with a blue pump. The red doesn't have a good track record with VW's and V8 racer, but some love them. If your needing any help with the fuel system let me know and I'll help you out anything.
The red pump puts out about 7 psi, and I had it regulated just before the carbs with a red regulator to 3 PSI (yes, I used the right rebuild kit...). I guess the red pump just doesn't like having it's flow restricted that much and is overheating or something, after driving for a while the pump wouldn't even put out 3 psi... Yeah, I ran a blue pump in the past with a similar set up and never had problems with it. When I ran the blue pump I went from it to a blue regulator, from the blue regulator to the NOS system and to a red regulator, and then from the red regulator to the carbs. I think just putting in the return style regulator is going to solve the problem because then the red pump can basically flow at max flow all the time which should keep it from being overworked.
