there's no adjustment on the idle jets, just the idle mixture screws. ;)

I have Holley on a couple of cars and they are very loud especially when they aren't getting fuel.. My vert was having some weird issues like that and it turned out to be the supply line from the tank was kinked.. Hopefully your making some progress!

Ok now that I have caught up on yhe thread I'll throw my thoughts in. Before you do anything I'd pick up a new gauge if that one is crapping out. Once you do that then set the regulator to the correct psi. If your saying it works 2percent of the time I would even trust it. If you are having trouble keeping it running below 3k then you have too much fuel pressure. I know this as a fact because we ran into the same issue when we were headed to the Austin show and my pump went out. I put a new electric fuel pump on the side of the freeway and had the same problems your having. Once I installed the regulator and pressure gauge everything worked perfect. DO NOT go any further until you chanGe the fuel pressure gauge. You have my number so call me and I can walk you through it.

And when you go to buy a new gauge, don't buy the liquid filled one. They show lower (or zero) pressure when they got warm in the engine bay.

Is it because of the low psi that it will show it at zero?

Hey John, thanks for the info - as always. I plan on picking up a new fuel regulator gauge ASAP. I'll text or call if I can't figure stuff out. Dave (my friend you met when I came down to Texas) will probably hold a flashlight or screwdriver if I need an extra hand.

Thanks all for your thoughts/ideas on the fuel delivery issue with the Bug.

As I told John, I'm going to 86 the Mr. Gasket gauge and pick up a new one. I'll clean out any carb crud I might come across in the areas mentioned, including the idle jets and set the fuel psi at the suggested numbers.

I'll start simple and see what happens.

Thanks again for imparting VW know-how to this noob.

Oh, I ran across a guy in town today with a pretty sweet 73 Thing. Got his name and number but I didn't have a camera on me. I'll try to hook back up with him and post a photo of his ride.

The holly pumps are pretty noisy, mine make a lot of noise when I turn on the ignition before starting the engine. They are most noisy when there is little to no flow coming out of them, like when both needle and seat valves are closed. It's normal. I also hear a lot of racket from the regulator when the pump is running but before starting the engine, all normal. Those Mr gasket gauges are junk, buy a better one from a speed shop and it will serve you well. Set your fuel pressure at 3 to 3.5 psi.

As said by others, sounds like a clogged idle circuit. you can pinpoint exactly which one it is by pulling spark plug wire one at a time with the engine running. The one that makes no difference in idle speed is the offending cylinder/idle circuit. It's a good idea to pull the carb, there may be junk in the float bowl, it will just get clogged again if you don't get it spotless. The idle jet holes are only like .020" in diameter, so it doesn't take much to clog them...

The pump doesn't seem too loud, the real racket seems to be from the regulator. Mr. Gasket is going in the trash. I'll pick up a new gauge and set the pressure at the above numbers. I'll also pull the plugs to narrow the potential offending cylinder/idle circuit, check float bowl, etc.

Will let you know what I find. Thanks again.

Late night in garage tonight (this morning). Seems like the only time to turn wrenches is after 10:30 p.m.

Just a quick update. I picked up a new fuel pressure gauge; most of the stores around town had ol' Mr. Gasket junk. I opted to order the dry-filled Allstar performance unit below. The new gauge is on, but it was too damn late to fire up the Bug and set the psi.

I ended up pulling both carbs. The idle jets (55) looked good but I did find a chunk of junk in one of the passages. I cleaned it all out and put the jets back in. So thanks to all of you that said idle jet problem from 3,000 miles away.

My plan is to get things dialed back in this weekend. After all, there are only so many sunny days left in Michigan before the snow flies.
