They really do ride nice, VW changed the suspension to ball joint and IRS for a reason...

I've only riden in a swingaxle Bug :) and Eric's and Chuck's Type-3's. Are those IRS?

Chucks is swing for sure, not sure about the woodwagen, on type ones IRS started in 69, but t3's were usually technologically ahead of type 1's, so I'm not sure...
