I think Murray is running a tall tire, 205/70, making it just over 26" tall.

yeah, currently running a 205/70. which means i guess i could get a little more out of the .89. At this point, I think my two choices are the 3.88 with .89 (like ScottyG runs) or a 4.12 with .82. I've been told a 3.88 mainshaft is stronger but is that really a contributing factor for me? I "drive" my car, it won't be at the track, AT ALL.

The main shaft is 1st/2nd...
The 3.88 R&P is the strongest due to its thickness compared to the other options. If you're not planning on abusing it and not making huge amounts of power then any R&P will be fine...

Here's your car with a 26" tire, 3.88 R&P, and .89 4th. Looks like a good freeway cruiser 8-)

I run a 1.48 3rd and a 1.04 4th, I don't drive on the freeways much, so the 1.04 4th isn't too much of a problem. I like having a nice tight gear stack so it pulls like a freight train though all 4

Delayed update. A lot has changed since the install of the breather box. I heard a noise coming from the trans back in Jan2015 time-frame and decided to go all out and build a whole new Transmission. Udo did the build for me and did an awesome job. It's a 4:12 with steel gears, steel shafts, hardened keys, HD side-cover, bigger axles, and I swapped the 4th gear to a taller .082. I'm sure I'm forgetting a ton of what went into it, but I'm happy with it 100%. It flies on the freeway, cruising 70 mph at 3,000 RPMs. Just buzzes along. Since it was all apart, I took my axle tubes to my powder-coater and also swapped from stock VW mounts to solid mounts. Given the fact that there really isn't much for an interior in this car, I didn't even notice a difference in vibration and/or sound. While the axle tubes were out, I went to town on the lower shock mounts, deleting them completely since I run extended lower shock mounts anyways. Here are some pics.

Also! For the longest time, I have wanted to run an aftermarket shifter in my split. Unfortunately, it wasn't that simple of a swap. Split window beetles use a straight shift rod with no shift coupler, and the shift ball on the split shifter is a lot smaller. So running an aftermarket shifter would not fit since the shift rod accepts the smaller ball size. So for the past 8 months or so, I have been trying to source the only shift rod that would fit in my application, allowing me to run a larger fulcrum ball, aftermarket shifter. Specifically, it was a 1953-1955 beetle shift rod I was painstakingly looking for. So after 8 months or so, I finally found the shift rod! In fact, I found 2 and I bought them both, lol. So I made the swap, and installed an old school Gene Berg shifter. What a difference in feel and shortened throw it made. Happy all day.
