But.... don't forget that Vintage Speed is still "Slow Speed". I'm not the least bit impressed with my Wolfsburg/Okrasa 36-er power levels.

Bang for the buck ratio is poor.

I like vintage speed myself.. You can get clean reliable power from it..

N8 and I also spoke of some larger internals to get some power and leave the top end OLD SCHOOL..
But either way You can grab extra HP when you "sweat the details" .. even if you didn't go big inside..

Like the look, oil container and all. Just want to build something reliable so I can drive. Thanks Scotty for the advice, I'll look at some different.

A 40 horse is going to be pretty limited by the 40-horse-SP heads, but you can punch it out a little, maybe run like a 110 cam, some 1.25:1 rockers, a small merged header, and duel carbs and probably make more than a stock 1600. And look cool doing it 8-)

I had the new WW/Okrasa heads milled to 8:1; replaced the sloppy guides, reworked the valve job, fitted TotalSeal rings, custom WebCam, had Mr. Okrasa do the whole enchilada on the Solex repop carbs...balanced the entire rotating assembly.......I think I covered most of the "details".

It runs nice and smooth, sounds good, and looks cool, but I'm not impressed with the "speed" side of Vintage Speed.

My 40 horse is awesome. I'm not disappointed at all after the big bore kit. It's no race car but its fun to drive.

I guess "speed" is a relative term. Your 36 horse would have been pretty fast back in its day Scotty. The "back in its day" is the "vintage" part of "vintage speed."
When I built my old ~180 horse 2176 years ago I had contemplated going vintage speed instead, but decided I'd rather be fast than cool. LOL I still love the look of a well done vintage speed motor, but honestly no where near as much as I love the look of my current IDA motor with its huge stacks.

I had a CPE 1385 in the 63.. bosch big cap and a 30pict1.. I did run the MSd box on it.. but man did that little motor run smooth and kill it for gas milage and pulling central texas hills.. the MSD box was night and day for power.. and it didn't change anylooks of the compartment..
