Hey guys - new guy here. Found this website through another one, but have been cruising the last few days looking at all the projects. There are some nice beetles in here! I'm on the NW side of Houston (249/Spring Cypress). I just got into VW the last few months after a friend gave me the bug (stupid pun). I've got another post going on Samba as well.

I picked this bad boy up for $650 dollars from a hippy in East Texas with 6 kids. Overall the body/frame are in really good condition, hardly any rust spots at all. I picked the car up in pieces - the PO had taken apart but never finished. The car already has new pans and was coated in Masterseries silver. Here are a few pictures - I'm in no hurry to complete this, it's just a weekend project right now. The plans are to restore to it's factory splendor (Pearl White).

When I picked it up:

I started working on the chassis / pan first. On the floor pans and chassis tube, I started by scuffing up the Masterseries and going over with POR-15 chassis coat. The parts not already coated were done with POR-15 through their whole process then finished with the chassis coat:

Some extra body and junk pictures. The car is very straight with little rust, even the heater channels are in really good shape. It didn't come with windshield so I can't tell when the car was last driven - title was registered in 1993 by PO and not sure when they stopped driving it (if at all). It came with a 1500 motor out of a '67 that I will be rebuilding and using.

I bought the cheap-o media blasting cabinet from Harbor freight and have started cleaning up some of the old parts. I'm trying to use the OG stuff were possible with the exception of seals, gaskets and stuff. I'm using aluminum oxide for the media... hope that's a good choice?

Using the stock beam - took a few sanding discs to it after knocking the 3" of dirt off it.

Awesome... I'm looking forward to meeting a few local peeps and I'm sure I'm going to need some resources... right off the bat:

Can someone suggest someone local who can press king pin bushings and ream them?

Also need someone to go through my transaxle, clean it up, install whatever seals it needs.

Eventually will be looking for some machine work on the case, crank.

Welcome Corey! great looking project. I love seeing these old cars get back on the road. The pan is looking good.

I like your garage walls. Great idea. I'm not too far from you, I live at 249 & Louetta. There's quite a few of us on this side of town.
