I bought this engine case for a really good deal all the machine work was done by Bernie Bergman in the early 90's.

Its machined for a 78.4 crank and 92mm pistons and has a weber 140 hydraulic cam

Hydraulic cam huh? Interesting. I wonder why those never really caught on for type 1's, seems they aren't very widely used....

My only guess is the extra cost in machining and parts as to why they didnt catch on. Every mexican bug has hydraulic lifters though.

No one is going to mantion the gasket groove around the sealing surface of the case?

it needs a pick up tube..

Hydraulic lifters.. if this is a VW Hyd. case.. then the bores are bigger than flat tappet lifter bores.. so if you plan to go with a different cam and lifter combo you will need to sleeve the lifter bores.. (Machine shop)

if it is like I just redid for DAN a MOFOCO hyd. setup.. then the cool thing is as I spoke with ROY is they machine stock VW flat tappet lifters
for their hyd. setup.. in house.. and there for the O.D. of the lifter is not different than any other regular lifter.. so I just changed the CAm and lifters and went on with the build inspection.. pretty easy..

as for the hyd. tune.. ROY stated.. basically when running valves.. set your lash to zero... then turn it in another 1/2 to full turn..
then the system will pressurize much faster.. but sometimes.. depending on the oil used.. and the way the case flows.. it can take upwards
of an hour to get them system fully functioning.. apparently they are extremely mild cams ..and are very easy on the valve terrain and quite running.. ISSUE IS .... Horizontal lifters will tend to bleed down.. if not ran often.. so back to chattery until the system picks up again.. I think
lots of people were not happy with this issue.. plus the lack of strong power.. instead of smooth power..

This is just what I think I learned while listening to ROY at MOFOCO.. very decent guy..

Here is some information i found on the cam

"Thats is a Bernie Bergmann grind made by weber cams. Advertised duration is 282*, lift at cam is .335", on a 108* LC. Medium to large displacement hot street, off road, mild bracket racing, with dual carbs, weber's or Dellortos, 8.0:1+.
That cam is good for a 1915 and up, and is designed to work with machine in small block Ford or Chevy hydraulic lifters, either one does not matter. Chevrolet diameter is the better choice however.
Rockers can be stock 1.1:1 to 1.4 ratio it depends what you want for lift as theres only a very mild change in valve event timing with that cam and various rockers. However the cam produces the best drivability and performance with the 1.25 rockers. "

I have all the receipts for all the machine work and that groove is listed as an o ring seal option.
