Some pics of my latest project, a 57 Oval. Has a 4-1/2" chopped top and a 64 metal sunroof grafted in as well. I picked this car up on Samba. It was a California show car back in the mid eighties. Has been mistreated over the years. It rides on a 73 pan. I have stripped it all down....body off, frame being reworked and will get gloss black POR-15 top and bottom. All new urethane bushings, new bearings, etc. Will have a 4" dropped, tube front axle with coil over shocks (see pic). Disc brakes all around. Rear will be lowered about 1-1/2". 15" front tires, 18" rears.

Cool project! I dig volksrods. There's some pretty neat ones out here.

You're not going to have much steering with that setup though, as long as the arms are on those spindles its going to have a huge turning radius and very sluggish response.

Brian,
Thanks for the words of support.
In reference to the front suspension. A good friend in CA designed this front suspension. He has put it on a number of other VW rods and it handles and drives extremely well. He worked on the geometry for several years and went through a number of steering arms and other combinations to get it to work like a modern vehicle. I can't wait to drive mine!

Oh cool, it really looks sharp! Can't wait to see more progress. Is that yours in the pic, or just a pic of the same setup?
Does it use a long pitman arm or something to make up for the long spindle arms?

Brian,
Picture of a setup from my CA friend. I have all the parts, just not together yet....but, mine has slightly shorter spindle arms and slightly longer pitman arm. More pics as progress continues.

Post subject:  57 Streetrod Project - Update as of Christmas 2014

More work on the Dub. Car was in fairly bad shape once all was pulled apart. Below are a couple of pics of the pan. Had to replace the entire left side (strange usually it’s the right side), of the pan as well as welding up a number of holes in the right side. Pic of pan head has a coat of POR-15 (it’s not gray, as it looks, it’s actually gloss black.). Once I finish all the small other holes and tears, the entire pan will get the POR-15 treatment.
Even though the pan was in rough shape, the body is way worse. I’ve had it media blasted and had to stop blasting in many places as virtually the entire body was “skimmed” with filler. The blasting exposed a number of repaired panels and even the entire right side of the car was replaced at some time. The best parts of the body are the chopped top (done well), and the ‘64 style metal sunroof that was grafted on. I’ve even had to replace the aft sections of the body including a correct “H” pattern apron (new manufacture from England).

Well, that’s the current news...almost. I forgot to mention I was able to pick up a case that was set up by Lyle Cherry and now have all the basic parts to build a nice 1776cc with all new parts. I intend to have a mild street engine even with AC! Damon Harmon has a nice rebuilt street tranny for me that I’ll pick up after the holidays.....

More info as it breaks (should I say this ???) ...

Great update! The new H apron was high dollar, how was the fit? I have seen the ad for them several times and have always wondered how much easier the installation was compared to the other rear clips available that are non H.
